UPDATE: The attempted assassin has been identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Illinois, a Bernie Sanders-supporting Democrat who declared online “Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.”

A gunman opened fire early Wednesday morning on Republican members of Congress practicing for a charity baseball game.

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise was wounded in the hip, as were an undetermined number of other unidentified people.  The guman reportedly fired between 50 and 100 shots at Republicans.

The gunman was taken down by a wounded member of Scalise’s security detail.  Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who was at the practice, notes that had Scalise, a member of House leadership, not been there, there would have no security personnel and dozens could have been killed.

According to witness accounts, the gunman checked to make sure the congressmen were Republicans before retrieving his gun and opening fire.

The congressmen were practicing for Thursday’s annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity.

UPDATE: Texas Congressman Roger Williams was injured in the shooting, but it is unknown if he was shot or injured while seeking cover.

UPDATE: The shooting occurred in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington. Local streets have been closed and schools are in lockdown.
