Ilhan Omar caught lying about gun deaths

Embattled liberal Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN,) already credibly accused of tax fraud, took another hit as even the reliably liberal “PolitiFact” called her out for faking gun statistics.

Promoting a bill mandating background checks on private transfers of guns, which would create a national database of gunowners, Omar falsely claimed “Gun violence is an epidemic. Every day on average 500 people die from gun violence. How many more lives will we let gun violence claim?”

That was too big a lie for even “PolitiFact” to swallow.

“At 500 per day, that would be 182,500 deaths per year from gun violence in the United States. The actual figure is nowhere near that high,” the site said.

Rating her claim “False,” the site noted the actual figure, as documented by the Centers for Disease Control, is 100.

60 of those 100 are suicides. Of the remaining 40, most appear to be criminals killed either by other criminals, police and armed citizens.

The 500 figure appears to be one referencing all deaths worldwide, which has nothing to do with U.S. background checks.

After being told the figure was false Omar’s office defended her claim anyway.
