China could completely wipe out all US military forces in the Pacific in just a matter of hours, a new report reveals.

Research by the United States Study Center at Australia’s University of Sydney finds that years of US military cutbacks and Chinese military expansion have put American forces in the Pacific in the same position they were before Pearl Harbor.

“The combined effect of ongoing wars in the Middle East, budget austerity, underinvestment in advanced military capabilities and the scale of America’s liberal order-building agenda has left the US armed forces ill-prepared for great power competition in the Indo-Pacific,” the report read.

The report concludes that if China were to launch a preemptive strike they could annihilate all US land, sea and air power in the Pacific before the US could respond.

China’s “growing arsenal of accurate long-range missiles poses a major threat to almost all American, allied and partner bases, airstrips, ports and military installations in the Western Pacific,” the report reads. “As these facilities could be rendered useless by precision strikes in the opening hours of a conflict, the PLA missile threat challenges America’s ability to freely operate its forces from forward locations throughout the region.”

The report calls on Australia, Japan and other Pacific nations to work with the United States to invest more military resources into the region, where it appears China is about to use military force against civilians in Hong Kong, and may do the same to Taiwan.
