The reasons why Putin allegedly decided to attack Ukraine included the internal Ukrainian conflict in the “rebel regions” of Donetsk and Luhansk; NATO expansion as shown in the map, and Putin’s aim to recreate the Russian Empire of Tsar Peter the Great. He desperately wants better access to the Black Sea and the sea of Azov and a land route to the major port of Odesa. It is possible that as his army stalls, peacekeeping talks might suggest that a compromise is suggested which would divide the country in two, creating a buffer zone between Europe and Russia, as well as organizing a land bridge to Crimea. The fact that the Ukrainian forces have spent the last eight years fighting in the region could make this solution attractive to President Zelensky in Kiyv.
