On Thursday, President Joe Biden’s administration attributed the deadly and chaotic 2021 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan to his predecessor, President Donald Trump. The White House publicly released a 12-page summary of the results of the “hotwash” of U.S. policies around the ending of the nation’s longest war. However, it takes little responsibility for its own actions and claims that Trump’s decisions severely constrained Biden.
The summary does admit that the evacuation of Americans and allies from Afghanistan should have begun earlier. But, it shifts blame for the delays onto the Afghan government and military, as well as the U.S. military and intelligence community assessments.
The National Security Council at the White House drafted the brief document, rather than an independent entity. Although detailed reviews conducted by the State Department and the Pentagon were transmitted privately to Congress on Thursday, the highly classified reviews will not be publicly released.
Watch as the White House spokesperson says leaving materiel behind is standard operating procedure when handing over to a local militia and anyway, Trump made it difficult to extract the equipment.
