Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus. The virus is transmitted through close contact, clothing contaminated, surfaces, consumption of contaminated meat, and sexual contact.
Apparently, a dangerous, mutated strain of the virus has been detected in at least six African countries, leading the World Health Organisation (WHO), as well continental health authorities, to declare a health emergency.

Anyone can get monkeypox, but in the this as in most outbreaks, the virus is predominantly spreading among gay and bisexual men.
That doesn’t mean the virus is always sexually transmitted, but officials say it shows that prolonged skin-to-skin contact is one of the major ways monkeypox is now spreading. CNN
Mpox is a less contagious cousin of smallpox with generally milder symptoms, although it still can be lethal. While about 30 per cent of smallpox patients died, the fatality rate for mpox has been about 3 per cent to 6 per cent.
The disease was discovered at the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen in 1958, where it was spreading in monkeys kept for research. That led to its former designation: monkeypox.
Although the main animal source of mpox disease has not been identified, rodents are suspected of playing a part in transmission. WHO changed the name of the disease to mpox in 2022, to curb what it called “racist and stigmatizing language” surrounding the infection. Straits Times
