This tragic story from WNC demonstrates how catastrophic the mudslides throughout the area were. This man lost 11 members of the Craig family who lived in this North Carolina community, dubbed ‘Craigtown’ by locals, for 80 years.
Jesse lost both his parents, two of his cousins, his aunt and uncle and his great aunt and uncle in a mudslide down a single path through the Craigtown valley, formally known as Garren Creek. Three additional Craig relatives and two others who were not related to the family perished in the mudslides, including a firefighter who was working to rescue others.
His description of events is horrific.
