Very occasionally we encounter someone who is not just knowledgeable but who is able to succinctly explain something complex to us like we are five-year-olds. Jeffrey Sachs is such a person. Watch this explanation of the localized world war that is playing out as regional version of the real thing in Ukraine.
This explains – but does not excuse – the eruption of hostility from Russia. The eastern part of Ukraine, along with the Crimea peninsula, has always thought of itself as Russian. In their eyes, they are staying where they want to be: far away from a bizarre kleptocracy governed by corrupt despots and CIA plants.
Although Sachs does omit the part where Clinton originally told Putin, yes he could join NATO, then flip-flopped and denied him entry.
