Itraconazole is a prescription medication used to treat fungal infections of the lungs, mouth or throat, tonenails or fingernails. Itraconazole is available under the following different brand names: Sporanox, Onmel, Tosura.
The case study below describes a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who exhibited symptoms and biochemical markers suggesting fungal (Aspergillus) colonization in the gastrointestinal tract. Initial treatment with the antifungal probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii triggered a Herxheimer reaction, indicating that mold colonization might be contributing to the child’s autism.
The physician, Dr. Baker, then opted for a more potent antifungal therapy using itraconazole, specifically the Sporanox® brand, due to its effectiveness against Aspergillus species. The child was treated as an outpatient, with liver function tests monitored twice weekly, which remained normal throughout the therapy.
The results were striking: the child experienced a complete recovery from all autism symptoms within three months, coinciding with a significant reduction in urine markers of Aspergillus colonization. Additionally, the child developed exceptional academic, athletic, and musical abilities.
The conclusions suggest that the escalation of itraconazole dosage led to the rapid and complete reversal of autism symptoms, supporting the hypothesis that mold, particularly Aspergillus, could be a major contributing factor to autism in some cases. This aligns with other research proposing a link between fungal infections and autism.
