Czech Takeover of U.S. Ammo Giants Slips Under Radar

In November 2024, the Czechoslovak Group (CSG), a Czech industrial conglomerate, quietly acquired Federal, Remington, CCI, Speer, and Hevi-Shot ammunition brands under The Kinetic Group from Vista Outdoor for $2.225 billion. This deal, noted on CSG’s website and reported by outlets like Outdoor Life and American Rifleman, grants CSG significant control over U.S. small-caliber ammunition production, including roughly 70% of domestic primer output and management of the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Slipping under the radar, this transaction has sparked unease among some Americans, particularly regarding its implications for national security and ammo availability in wartime. The Czech Republic, an EU and NATO member, adds a layer of complexity to these concerns.

CSG’s ownership raises questions about supply chain vulnerabilities. Critics, including Senators J.D. Vance and John Kennedy, warn that a foreign entity could prioritize exports to NATO allies or Ukraine during conflicts, potentially limiting U.S. civilian and military access to ammunition. CSG’s website doesn’t explicitly state such prioritization, but the possibility fuels apprehension. The deal’s low profile has amplified these worries, as many feel it wasn’t adequately scrutinized.

On the other hand, CSG and Kinetic Group CEO Jason Vanderbrink emphasize that production will remain in the U.S., preserving 3,800 jobs across facilities in Minnesota, Arkansas, Idaho, and Oregon. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) approved the transaction, suggesting no immediate security risks. Vanderbrink insists that factories maintain separate capacities for civilian and military needs, and CSG’s NATO alignment and support for Ukraine align with U.S. interests. CSG’s expertise, bolstered by its ownership of Fiocchi, could enhance production stability.

While short-term risks seem mitigated by U.S. oversight, the long-term reliance on a foreign-controlled ammo supply—especially from an EU nation with international commitments—demands vigilance. The deal’s quiet passage underscores the need for greater public awareness to ensure domestic needs are safeguarded in future crises.
