Hasan Piker is a socialist Twitch streamer with a large young audience. Progressive candidates court him for energy, donations, and online buzz in primaries. Senator John Fetterman sees the obvious problem: that same association becomes a liability the moment the electorate expands beyond activists. In a general election, Piker’s record is a gift to Republicans.
The Greatest Hits
Piker’s catalog is not subtle. In 2019 he said “America deserved 9/11.” He later tried to walk it back as foreign-policy critique, but the words stand. He mocked Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw’s combat injury by praising the “brave” mujahideen who “fucked his eye hole.” He has called America “the top terrorist organization” and said if Hezbollah is a terrorist group then the United States is the top dog in terrorism. He has declared he has “no patriotism in my heart” for America and told Yale students the American empire is fading and will inevitably fall, likely in violent fashion.
On Israel and Jews the record is equally stark. He has said Hamas is “a thousand times better” than Israel and that he would vote for Hamas over Israel every time. He minimized sexual violence on October 7: “It doesn’t matter if fucking rapes happened on October 7. It doesn’t change the dynamic for me.” He has referred to ultra-Orthodox Jews as “inbred” and compared liberal Zionists to “liberal Nazis.” He has used language about “bloodthirsty, violent pig-dog” against critics. These are not offhand slips. They are repeated, defended, and treated as moral clarity by his audience.
Abdul El-Sayed says Hasan Piker is “welcome to his perspective” after he called Haley Stevens’ voters “Islamophobic pieces of shit.”

Fetterman Sees the Trap
After Abdul El-Sayed’s primary win in Michigan, Fetterman issued a public dare: keep campaigning with Piker in the general election. He predicted Republicans would pour money into ads highlighting the association, specifically the 9/11 comment and the rest of the record. Fetterman understands general-election math. Michigan is not a progressive primary electorate. Independents, veterans, Jewish voters, and working-class Democrats who do not share Piker’s worldview will see the clips. El-Sayed and other progressive candidates treat the association as a non-issue or a badge of authenticity. That works when the voters are already on the left. It collapses when the map expands.
🚨 JUST IN: Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) just BLEW UP on the Democrats who pushed Abdul El Sayed
“I just want to issue a DARE: continue to campaign with HASAN PIKER! Right now you’re in a general election now. I dare you, I dare you, keep campaigning with someone like Hasan… pic.twitter.com/C2yFwFejI5

Why This Becomes a Determining Factor
Piker’s value is real inside the activist ecosystem. He mobilizes young men, generates small-dollar money, and validates candidates to the DSA-aligned base. Candidates who want that energy keep inviting him. The problem is the broader electorate. Attack ads write themselves: the 9/11 line, the praise for groups the U.S. designates as terrorists, the dismissal of October 7 atrocities, the contempt for American patriotism. These are not policy disagreements that can be spun. They are statements that most voters find repulsive.
Abdul El-Sayed DODGES when asked if he will continue to campaign with Hasan Piker.

EL-SAYED: “I’m focused on campaigning in this state…I’m not as focused on who I’m campaigning with.” pic.twitter.com/wKWPfHoct4

Every time a Democrat appears with Piker or accepts his platforming, Republicans gain free ammunition. In close Senate and House races, that ammunition matters. Moderates and swing voters do not need to parse Marxist theory. They hear “America deserved 9/11” and “Hamas is better than Israel” and decide accordingly. The more the progressive wing treats Piker as a legitimate surrogate, the easier it becomes for opponents to paint the entire ticket as extreme and anti-American.
Piker is not the sole cause of Democratic losses. He is a highly visible symptom and an accelerant. Candidates who believe his audience is the future keep embracing him. Candidates who understand general elections treat the association as the kiss of death. Fetterman is in the second camp. The results in November will show which side read the room correctly.
