Trump Offers Cash for Fraud Tips as ICE Targets Illegal Immigrants on Food Stamps

If you catch someone stealing from taxpayers, President Trump wants to pay you for it.

In the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump and Vice President JD Vance rolled out the Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program. It is a $25 million fund run by the Justice Department. According to the White House, anyone whose tip leads to a fraud conviction or a significant federal enforcement action can collect up to $30,000. Tips go to fraud.gov.

The same night, Fox News reported that ICE had launched a nationwide operation against illegal immigrants accused of collecting food stamps. The message from both moves is the same: the free ride is over.

Cash for tips that deliver

Trump described the reward in plain terms. “If you turn somebody in and you, let’s say report, and you find $1 billion, we are giving a commission to that person of 1%,” he said, according to Fox News. The White House’s written description puts the cap at $30,000, and officials haven’t explained how the two fit together.

A tip alone won’t pay. It has to lead to a conviction or real enforcement action. Trump said he would personally settle disputes between competing tipsters. “It’ll be done expeditiously and fairly,” he said.

Vance summed up the pitch: “If you want to help us stop it, you get to share in the rewards.”

The guest of honor was Nick Shirley, the independent journalist whose December 2025 video on Somali-run daycare centers in Minnesota helped trigger a federal crackdown. The AP reported the White House planned for Trump to hand him a $10,000 check. One center in his video was Future Leaders Early Learning Center. Its former CEO, Fahima Egeh Mahamud, pleaded guilty in July to wire fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors said she stole more than $4.6 million in child care money and $850,000 from a federal child nutrition program.

“Instead of the mainstream media investigating the fraud they investigated me,” Shirley said.

The numbers Trump cited

Trump said the administration has removed 160,000 dead people from food stamp rolls and 275,000 illegal immigrants from Social Security, and has found 562,000 fraudulent small-business loans, according to RedState’s account of the event. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz announced he is holding back another $1.2 billion in California Medicaid payments tied to personal care services.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, vice chairman of Vance’s fraud task force, called on Congress to set mandatory minimum prison terms for benefits fraud. He also wants state officials held liable when they fail to stop fraud they could have prevented.

“Americans only”

ICE’s first arrests in the food stamp operation included four Haitian nationals and a Cuban national, all in the country illegally, according to DHS. DHS said every one of them entered unlawfully. ICE called the arrests “the opening salvo in a sustained, large-scale ICE operation.”

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin didn’t mince words. “Illegal aliens who have no right to be here in the first place are the last people who should be using SNAP benefits,” he said. “These programs are for Americans only.”

Federal law generally bars illegal immigrants from receiving SNAP. The Justice Department says its new fraud division has brought more than 1,000 major fraud actions covering Medicaid, SNAP, housing, Social Security and small-business programs.

Shirley’s critics have long attacked his reporting, and the AP noted that inspectors had said the centers in his video were operating as expected. The guilty plea from one of those centers’ leaders speaks for itself.

The bottom line

For years, the people who exposed fraud got death threats and smears, while the people who committed it got checks. This administration is flipping that around. It is paying the honest citizen and deporting the cheat.

That is how it should work. Every dollar stolen from SNAP or Medicaid is a dollar taken from a working family that paid in. Politicians who shrug at billions in fraud while demanding higher taxes have lost the right to lecture anyone about “investing” in government.

The tip line is open. If Washington won’t police its own programs, the American people will.
