Democratic challenger Shelly Headen won North Carolina House District 62 on Tuesday despite posts that led her own party to abandon her, defeating Republican Rep. John Blust by 233 votes in a race still close enough for a recount.
Unofficial results from the North Carolina State Board of Elections, reported by Carolina Journal, show Headen with 21,367 votes, or 50.27%, to Blust’s 21,134, or 49.73%. The margin sits inside the state’s 1% recount threshold for nonstatewide races. Blust can request a recount after county results are certified on Nov. 13, Carolina Journal reported.
The posts that cost her party support
The race drew statewide and national attention in September after older social media posts resurfaced. In one, Headen wrote, “I think our only hope is an attack on US Soil … preferably Alabama, Louisiana … where the stupid people live,” Carolina Journal and Fox News reported.
🚨#BREAKING: NC Democrat Shelly Headen who said that Trump supporters belong in CONCENTRATION CAMPS… …WON HER NC HOUSE RACE YESTERDAY!!!!! She also wished for: "an attack on US soil… preferably Alabama, Louisiana… where the stupid people live." WHAT?!!!!!!!!! https://t.co/OaWSv2TE6c

Fox News reported that in separate posts she argued Trump’s damage was “getting close to surpassing Hitler” and claimed the “MAGA cult may be more destructive and evil than the Nazis.” Breitbart reported a Facebook post picturing her at a memorial at the Nazis’ Dachau concentration camp with the caption, “This is where Trump supporters belong.”
Headen denied to the Greensboro News and Record that she posted the concentration camp image and said she believed the caption was edited onto a real photo, Fox News reported. Fox News reported she said she did not remember making the posts and apologized to those hurt by them. In an interview with The Assembly, she described the posts as “a few angry moments.”
The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus said her posts were “unacceptable” and that it “will not support Shelly Headen’s candidacy.” The Guilford County Democratic Party withdrew “all financial, operational and organizational support,” Fox News reported. Ballots had already gone out, so she stayed on the ballot.
Conservative commentator Matt Van Swol amplified the race on X after her win, summarizing the attack-on-U.S.-soil line and the concentration-camp claim. I am attributing that framing to Van Swol; the quoted attack line and Nazi comparisons are from Carolina Journal and Fox News, and the Dachau caption is from Breitbart with Headen’s denial noted above.
A lean-Republican seat that flipped
Blust, a longtime Republican lawmaker, returned to the General Assembly in 2024. The John Locke Foundation’s 2026 Civitas Partisan Index rated the district R+2, Carolina Journal reported. Republicans have controlled the North Carolina House since 2011.
The bottom line
I will say this without softening it. A candidate who wrote that America’s “only hope” is an attack on U.S. soil aimed at states “where the stupid people live” has no business writing laws for North Carolina. Comparing fellow citizens to Nazis, and a reported Dachau caption placing Trump supporters there, is not a “few angry moments.” It is contempt for the people she now claims to represent.
Her party was right to drop her. Voters who still elected her owe their neighbors an explanation, and Blust should use every lawful recount option the state allows. The accusation and the denial on the Dachau image both belong in the record; the attack-on-U.S.-soil post does not need a caption dispute to be disqualifying.
Self-government cannot survive a politics that dreams of violence against Americans it disagrees with. Guilford County should remember that the next time a ballot asks for their trust.
