Reasonable force is one thing – this man is not resisting arrest and should not have been subjected to this appalling treatment. The police are obviously relishing his power – look at the body language. By any measure, crushing a man’s neck for five minutes is obscene. We don’t often report on incidents that involve urban survival, but this is a tragic case where even situational awareness skills probably couldn’t have helped this poor man.
We have seen comments on social media that suggest this man is faking, and that all prisoners call out that they are being hurt by the police. Rightly, the police department did not accept this defense. This is cruel and unusual punishment. It is also murder. Let us see how fairly this is dealt with.
George Floyd begged for air as the cop held him against the back wheel of a police car after he was detained in Minneapolis. In the video – which was originally posted to Facebook by Darnella Frazier – unarmed Mr Floyd says that he cannot breathe multiple times.
The four Minneapolis officers involved in the arrest of Floyd were fired yesterday, hours after a bystander’s video showed an officer kneeling on the handcuffed man’s neck, even after he pleaded that he could not breathe and stopped moving.
The ten-minute video has been cut short, as scenes were too distressing to show in full.
Minneapolis responded with a rally that turned to violence quickly.
News that the police officer responsible was a Trump supporter, who had met with the president at a rally, inflamed the situation and triggered a social media blitzkrieg. It is not clear from these photos whether this is the same man.
