Just a few weeks out from the November midterms, the White House is going to “great lengths” to “show it is focused on driving prices down”. What it’s doing is inept. Releasing 15 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Oil Reserve today is an ineffective way to stifle gas prices, for as everyone knows Americans consume that amount in one day. It is a marginal hit on prices, but a significant amount of fuel which could be used in a localized emergency. He is doing this “in response” to recent production cuts announced by OPEC and other countries. What he should be doing is approving drilling permits here in America and offshore, and encouraging the construction of oil refineries – we haven’t had a new one since 1977.
