Who do we give to? – AMERICAN PHILANTHROPY, BY THE NUMBERS

The holiday season is a time of giving … and Americans are known for their philanthropy. In 2022, Americans gave an incredible $499 billion to charitable causes. Which type of charities received the most?

Americans gave $51 billion to health-related charities.

$57 billion went to charitable foundations.

Educational organizations received $70 billion in charitable gifts.

Human services charities, like food banks and homeless shelters, received $72 billion.

But the biggest recipients of American generosity were religious organizations, which received an astonishing $144 billion in 2022.

There was one piece of bad news amidst all this generosity.

In 2022, Americans’ charitable giving fell by over 10% in inflation-adjusted terms … marking only the fourth time in 40 years that donations to charity had actually declined. Analysts blamed a shaky stock market and high inflation.

The good news: America remains the most charitable nation in the world.
