BACKGROUND: President Biden nominated Levine to serve as the 17th Assistant Secretary for Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Levine was confirmed by the Senate in March 2021 by a vote of 58-42, the first openly transgender official to be confirmed by the Senate as well as the highest-ranking openly transgender official in U.S. history. As Assistant Secretary for Health, Levine helps coordinate the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic along with many other public health efforts. Levine also oversees the U.S. Surgeon General.
In October 2021, Levine was sworn in as a four-star admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, the uniformed service branch of the United States Public Health Service and one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. Levine is its highest-ranking member and its first-ever transsexual four-star admiral.
