Scientists Discover Unique 100 Hz Sound That Alleviates Motion Sickness

Nagoya University researchers, led by Takumi Kagawa and Masashi Kato, discovered that a 100 Hz sound, termed “sound spice,” reduces motion sickness by stimulating the inner ear’s otolithic organs, which manage balance.

One minute of this sound significantly alleviates symptoms like nausea and dizziness in people exposed to motion, such as reading in a moving vehicle. Tested on humans and mice, the sound enhances sympathetic nerve activity and improves balance, with effects confirmed via postural control, ECG, and questionnaires. Safe at levels below workplace noise standards, this technology offers a simple, effective solution for motion sickness, with potential applications for air and sea travel.

The findings were published in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine.
