Close, but no cigar. Let’s hope our “Peace President” who has currently ended seven wars and with Palestine might make it eight, is recognized next year.
On October 10, 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, 58, for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela” and her struggle for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy under Nicolás Maduro’s regime. A former National Assembly member and founder of Vente Venezuela, Machado has unified opposition forces despite being disqualified from the 2024 presidential race. Living in hiding since August 2024 due to arrest threats, her nonviolent resistance has inspired millions, making her the first Venezuelan Nobel laureate and highlighting the global fight for democracy.
Nomination timeline
The award was announced on the same day as Trump’s recent diplomatic push for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire phase, but nominations for the 2025 prize closed on January 31, 2025—just 11 days after his inauguration as the 47th U.S. President on January 20, 2025. This tight timeline made any self-nomination impossible, as the process honors efforts from the prior year (2024), before his return to the White House.
Trump has expressed strong support for Machado, notably in January 2025, when he called for her release after her brief detention during a protest, amplifying international pressure that secured her freedom.
Machado’s efforts focus on restoring democratic institutions in Venezuela, where she has faced significant personal risk. Her leadership has drawn global attention to the country’s political crisis, earning her this prestigious recognition. She and President Trump are mutually supportive and she issued this post.
