The Socialist Nutter Dragging Down the Entire Ticket
Graham Platner’s nomination in Maine is turning into a slow-motion car crash for Democrats, and they have no one to blame but themselves. The oyster farmer and veteran steamrolled to a 72 percent win in the June 9 primary, but his mountain of personal and ideological baggage — the Nazi-linked tattoo he kept for nearly two decades, violent and toxic behavior toward women, old Reddit posts embracing communism and bashing cops and normal Americans — is now poisoning the well for Senate candidates nationwide and complicating DNC fundraising efforts. This is what happens when a desperate party lowers its standards to the floor in pursuit of a flip against Susan Collins. They didn’t just nominate a flawed candidate. They platformed a walking liability and then spent weeks excusing the inexcusable.
The Baggage That Keeps Dropping
Platner’s rap sheet is exhaustive. The chest tattoo resembling the Totenkopf — the death’s head symbol of Hitler’s SS — was inked in 2007 during his Marine days. He claimed ignorance of its meaning for years, only covering it up once the scandal hit during the campaign. Ex-girlfriends described patterns of verbal abuse, physical intimidation, arm-twisting, and locking one in a room. Fresh allegations of post-marriage sexting to multiple women surfaced right before the primary. His old Reddit posts under various handles revealed self-described communism, “all cops are bastards” rhetoric, homophobic slurs, victim-blaming on sexual assault, and other unhinged commentary from his “dark period” after military service.
None of this was hidden. It all poured out before and during the primary. Yet Democrats rallied around him after Janet Mills dropped out in late April, clearing his path.
How They Dug the Grave: Endorsements, Excuses, and Desperation
Party leaders and progressive heavyweights made a conscious choice. Ro Khanna campaigned with him, pushing the “redemption arc” narrative — PTSD, heavy drinking, growth as an oyster farmer, and accountability. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren lent early credibility. National Democrats, including Chuck Schumer, offered lukewarm endorsements focused on flipping the seat while quietly seething. Some, like Rep. Jake Auchincloss and Sen. John Fetterman, broke ranks to call the tattoo and behavior disqualifying, warning it hurt the party’s brand. But the machine mostly circled the wagons: “He’s anti-establishment,” “voters knew,” “Republicans have no moral high ground.”

This was pure electoral math gone wrong. Maine’s Senate race is critical for any hope of flipping the chamber. Collins is a long-serving moderate Republican. Democrats bet that Platner’s populist outsider energy and veteran status could overcome the scandals in a state that likes independents. They ignored the obvious: independents and moderates who decide Maine races don’t overlook Nazi symbols, communist nostalgia, or credible abuse claims. By excusing it all under “youthful mistakes” or “PTSD recovery,” they validated lowered standards and handed Republicans a permanent attack ad.
The Self-Inflicted Damage
The blowback is already hitting. Fundraising for Platner spiked on some scandal days from the activist base, but national donors and institutional Democrats are nervous. The race that was supposed to be a top pickup opportunity now looks like a drag on the map. Other Senate candidates face questions about associating with the brand. Down-ballot races in Maine and national messaging suffer from the constant drip of new revelations. Internal divisions are widening — progressives defend him as authentic, while moderates see electoral suicide. The DNC finds itself defending the indefensible while trying to paint Republicans as extreme.

This fiasco reveals the deeper rot: Democrats prioritized beating Collins over basic character standards. They bet that media spin, “redemption” stories, and anti-Trump fervor would paper over the mess. Instead, they nominated a candidate whose past makes him toxic to the very voters needed to win. Collins looks steady and experienced by comparison. Platner’s win in the primary exposed the party’s activist-driven base, but the general election will expose the cost of excusing the inexcusable.
Democrats dug this grave by choosing power over principles. They platformed the nutter, defended his atrocious history, and now own the fallout. America First voters and Maine independents see it clearly: one side demands better, the other settles for whatever wins the primary. The midterms will deliver the bill for this self-inflicted wound.
