HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has drawn a straight line from decades of reckless gain-of-function research to some of the most stubborn and damaging illnesses hitting Americans. Lyme disease, he says, “almost certainly” emerged from laboratory experiments. RSV, now one of the leading killers of children, came out of the same kind of work. COVID-19 followed the same pattern. Kennedy is not offering polite academic speculation. He is treating these as the predictable results of research that makes pathogens more dangerous, then loses control of them.

The Pattern of Lab Risks

That assessment matches a longer pattern. American and allied labs have conducted high-risk experiments on pathogens for generations, often under military or dual-use justifications. Plum Island’s history of animal disease and tick research sits uncomfortably close to the first major recognition of Lyme in Connecticut. Official accounts insist the bacterium is purely natural and its spread purely ecological. Kennedy rejects that comfort. He points to the secrecy, the weaponization programs of the mid-20th century, and the absence of transparent accounting for what was actually done with ticks and bacteria. When institutions that funded or conducted the work later declare the origins settled, skepticism is the rational response.

RSV and the Missing Benefits

RSV follows a similar trajectory. The virus was first isolated in laboratory settings decades ago. Kennedy argues the epidemic burden it now imposes on infants is the downstream effect of experimental manipulation rather than simple natural circulation. The same institutions that champion gain-of-function as essential for “pandemic preparedness” have struggled to show concrete benefits that outweigh the risks. Kennedy’s question remains unanswered: name the clear, life-saving payoff from these experiments that justifies the repeated near-misses and the one catastrophic success in COVID.

COVID as the Bill Coming Due

COVID itself remains the clearest case. The virus appeared in the city housing the world’s leading laboratory for bat coronavirus engineering. U.S. funding flowed to that work through intermediaries. Early lab-leak discussions were suppressed as conspiracy. Kennedy treats the pattern as decisive. When the same research community that produced the risk also controls the narrative about its origin, the public is entitled to discount their assurances.

The Policy Response

Kennedy’s policy response is concrete. Federal support for the most dangerous gain-of-function work is being terminated. Scientists who continue it face permanent exclusion from grants. Universities that host it face liability. The United States will no longer underwrite the same experiments abroad. That is not fringe. It is the overdue recognition that enhancing the transmissibility or virulence of potential pandemic agents is an unacceptable gamble with civilian lives.

Banality, Not Cartoon Villainy

The government is not “trying to kill us” in the cartoon sense of a coordinated death cult. It is worse in its banality: a research establishment that prioritizes novelty, funding, and publication prestige over containment, then denies the predictable consequences when pathogens escape or circulate more effectively. Lyme patients have been gaslit for years. Families watching RSV put infants in intensive care get the same institutional shrug. COVID was the bill coming due.

Kennedy’s assertions force a choice. Either the official natural-origin stories for these diseases are complete and the lab work was always perfectly contained, or the repeated pattern of high-risk experiments, opacity, and sudden disease emergence is not coincidence. The second reading is the one that explains the policy he is now enforcing. Ending the research is the only rational step left.
