One person admitted they’d heard of the LA Metro the way you hear about a cryptid — rumored, feared, definitely not real enough to actually board. Another was stunned it wasn’t “rundown and haunted,” as advertised by, presumably, vibes alone.
Which is the funniest part of this whole story: Los Angeles built an entire rail system — stations with vaulted ceilings, tile work, the works — and somehow the ambient civic narrative became “this doesn’t really exist, or if it does, something bad will happen to you down there.” Meanwhile the trains have just been running. On schedule. This whole time.
Only in a city this large, this car-brained, and this constitutionally incapable of looking anywhere but the 405 could an entire subway system quietly operate for years as an urban legend. Angelenos will spend forty-five minutes narrating a freeway merge like it’s a Homeric epic, but a train platform two blocks away might as well be Narnia — heard about it, never been, unclear if it’s open to the public.
