I want you to see the sequence clearly. On Thursday, President Trump said he has every intention of keeping Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Hours later, Hegseth posted a defiant video from outside the Pentagon. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., is still promising an impeachment vote next week unless Hegseth resigns.
“I have every intention to keep him,” Trump said Thursday, according to the New York Post. “I get these calls, you know, about him. I don’t understand why.” Rapid Response 47 later posted Trump saying Hegseth “has done a fantastic job.”
Massie’s two posts
Massie lost his May primary after opposing the Iran war. On Wednesday night he wrote on X, “There is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns.”
Thursday morning he pressed further. “If Trump’s going to replace appointees like Hegseth, he should do it while he can still get the replacements confirmed in the Senate,” Massie wrote. “Also, my Hegseth impeachment resolution is a much gentler version of what’s coming when Dem’s control Congress. They’ll have hearings & trials.”
Fox News Digital reported that Massie intends to force a privileged House vote when Congress returns if Hegseth does not resign, and that several House Republicans believe such a resolution could pass.
Hegseth’s answer
Hegseth did not name Massie in the video the White House amplified with the line “Stand. Fight. Defend the Republic.” He made the target clear enough. “A disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly,” he said, according to Hannity.com’s transcript. “Just like they tried against President Trump, twice.”
He said the effort would not work against him either, called it politics of personal destruction, and declared, “We will not back down.” Washington Examiner reported that he closed by vowing to stand, fight, and defend the Republic. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told Fox that Hegseth remains committed through the end of Trump’s term, the Post reported.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries posted on X Thursday, “Why is Pete Hegseth still around?”
DataRepublican’s warning
The X account DataRepublican published a long analysis Thursday arguing that “HEGSETH’S IMPEACHMENT IS THE TROJAN HORSE” and that “TRUMP IS THE REAL TARGET.” She wrote that because Hegseth answers to the President under civilian control of the military, articles accusing him of following unlawful orders are really aimed at Trump. “When I told you Hegseth was the only obstacle in a coup, I meant it,” she wrote. Later she said, “That’s why Hegseth is my red line,” and urged Republicans to “Stop the coup.”
I am attributing those claims to DataRepublican. Her case is an analysis of chain-of-command implications, not public proof of a literal coup plot.
The bottom line
Massie has been consistent against the war, and voters punished Republicans over that war on Tuesday. Impeaching the Cabinet officer who carried out the President’s orders is still the wrong tool in a lame-duck House. The place to settle a war-powers dispute is a vote to authorize or end the war.
Trump is right to keep Hegseth for now. Handing Democrats a scalp before they take power would invite the hearings Massie himself warned are coming. DataRepublican’s warning deserves a hearing even if you reject the word “coup”: once the charge is that a secretary followed the President’s illegal orders, the next target is obvious.
Republicans have eight weeks of majority left. Use them to confirm nominees, fund the government, and defend a wartime chain of command. Do not help Democrats dismantle it.
