What Islamism actually means. A 90-second explanation.

Danny Burmawi (also known as Dan Burmawi) is a Jordanian-born author, speaker, and founder/CEO of the Ideological Defense Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to defending Judeo-Christian principles of Western civilization, particularly against political Islam.

Born in 1988 in Jordan to a Muslim family, he converted to Christianity around age 18–19. Facing risks as an apostate, he left Jordan for Lebanon, where he lived for about 15 years, leading Christian nonprofits and traveling extensively. He holds a Master of Theological Studies and relocated to the United States around 2023.

He is the author of Islam, Israel and the West: A Former Muslim’s Analysis, and a vocal critic of Islamism, arguing it stems from core Islamic theology rather than extremism. Burmawi speaks and writes on Middle East affairs, comparative religion, jihad, antisemitism, and the defense of Western values. He and his wife live in the U.S. with their son.
