Homemade beauty remedies

Being self-reliant isn’t all about catching your own dinner. Check out these easy recipes for facial beauty treatments using natural products you can pick up at your local health food store.

Herbal Facial

You will need:

1/8 cup dried herbs or flowers

approx. 5 cups hot, gently steaming water

large bowl

towel

Method

Combine dried herbs and flowers in a large bowl.  Some good choices for dried materials are rose petals, lavender, peppermint or rosemary leaves.  Pour the steaming water over the herbs and flowers.  Careful, if steam is too hot it can burn!  Be sure that the water is only lightly steaming.  Then, place the towel over your head and stand with your face over the bowl for about 15 minutes.  The steam will open pores and the scents of the herbs will invigorate and soothe.  Follow with a rinse of 2 cups of cool, clean water mixed with 1 tablespoon of baking soda.

Yeast/Wheat-Germ Moisturizing Mask

You will need:

1 tablespoon of brewer’s yeast

1 capsule of wheat germ oil

Method

Mix yeast and wheat-germ to make a paste.  Spread the paste over your face and relax for 15 or 20 minutes.  Rinse with 2 cups of lukewarm water blended with 1 tablespoon of baking soda.

Oatmeal/Cornmeal Scrub

You will need:

1/2 cup of old-fashioned oats

1/2 cup of white or yellow cornmeal

1 tablespoon of pure organic bentonite clay (available at most organic food stores)

Method

Combine oats, cornmeal and clay.  Add a splash of warm water to bring the mixture to a thick, pasty consistency.  Wet your face and rub the paste gently over your features to exfoliate, condition and brighten skin.  Rinse with lots of warm water.
